When you stand by the lake shore, surrounded by the forest and with no human settlements in sight, you feel that you have come to the end – or the beginning – of the World.
Lake Victoria is immense, the second largest lake in the World. It sustains the World’s largest freshwater fishery and moderates the climate of the entire region.
The water level is mainly controlled by a delicate balance between the evaporation from the lake and the rainfall back onto the lake, with an upper limit set by the outflow at Jinja, into the River Nile.
